Often, our confidence in our own decisions has been shaken because we’ve ended up in these career cul de sacs. Yet we return to the same way of choosing again and again—until we’re worn out and we stop trying.
At this point, we’re stuck. And we’re stuck because, at the point of making a choice, we’ve put too much weight on what others think. You’ve come this far in your career – all you really need is some help with regaining the confidence to use your hard-won skills. It’s a small change that’ll make a world of difference: a shift in the method you use to make your choices. I’ll teach you how to make that change and rediscover your Inner Compass.
When faced with a choice, only we know which option is more exciting to us. Our heart and soul can help us pick that option. When we choose with our heart and soul, we select options that inspire and energize us as we gain experience and wisdom. The outcomes will have a greater potential to help us grow—and enjoy the journey.
What follows is the process that we will use as we travel through your coaching journey. It provides a structure: a strong foundation on which to build your ideal career.
See your career history through new eyes to set the path for transformation and different choices, leading you to more desirable outcomes.
Expand your focus to reveal your options for a new direction.
Follow five key elements to allow you to make a positive change to ensure a free flowing future career which gives you joy every day.
Expanding your possibilities and your perspective
Position you to go hunting for what you want rather than what’s available
Ensure that you’re not just “one of the candidates”; you are the “solution to their problem”
Taking the steps you need to take to make people actively seek you out for the job you want.
Delivering and growing in your new role.
Developing and growing to be the best that you can be, and how to stay that way.
This enables you to see your career history through new eyes. This is important because often, when we are stuck, we are unaware of what we’re doing—or have done—to contribute to our current predicament. Becoming aware of these rules or practices allows for different choices, leading to more desirable outcomes
Finding yourself stuck can result from following someone else’s direction rather than your own. Or perhaps you’re concluding this part of your career. Your focus up to this point has been narrowed, so in this step, we expand your focus to reveal your options for a new direction.
Changing your career course or trajectory requires a different skill set than what’s needed for refining and perfecting your work in a job. We will focus on the five key elements needed to allow you to make this change and, in this case, move in a direction to avoid dead ends in your future career.
In this unique and critical step, we will work on expanding your possibilities. I liken this step of your pursuit to the task of explorers Lewis and Clark, who were asked to map the regions west of the Mississippi. Most of what they knew was anecdotal, and to map that region, they needed to experience that geography.
For you to know what your options are, you need to go out and learn what’s there.
Doing this will expand your perspective and, as a result, position you to go hunting for what you want, rather than waiting for something to appear on job posting sites.
We work together to ensure that you’re not just “one of the candidates”; you are the “solution to their problem”. We’ll survey the full landscape of possibilities while leveraging your existing interview experience. I’ll teach you to pick up on how your body reacts during stressful situations, and how to use that knowledge to turn yourself from an explorer into a hunter. You’ll learn the steps you need to take to make people actively seek you out for the job you want.
At this stage, you are in the job you want. Focus is shifted from pursuit of the right job to delivering and growing in this role, while remaining on your desired career path. Now, you’ll learn how to be the best that you can be, and how to stay that way in the long term. This is the secret to keeping your job interesting and enjoyable—and getting rid of that “I should know, but I don’t” feeling—always knowing what your next move should be.
To achieve this, we work together to transform how you do your job into how you build your career.
We focus on transforming issues from being obstacles from which you retreat, into signals for growth that lead to opportunities. You will grow from a reliable worker into a valued asset. The source of your growth will shift from your manager and the company to yourself. You’ll learn how to use your Inner Compass to turn the job you have into the job you love, propelling your career forward and avoiding dead ends. Isn’t this what you want from your work?
Noticing that my four-step process has five steps? That’s not a mistake—it’s a reflection of real career journeys. The first four steps are all about helping you find and land the right job where you are or in a different company. But what if you already have a job you want to keep? That’s where step five comes in. It’s designed to help you turn a good job into a great one by evolving how you work and grow within your role. Wherever you are in your career, let’s talk about what matters most to you—whether it’s finding a new job or making the most of the one you have!
